Valparaiso is a mix of old and new, eclectic and traditional, funky and weird and reminded me a lot of Wellington. Valparaiso or Valpo for short is an important port city a short drive away from the capital of Chile, Santiago. The city is built up around the port as the focal point with the neighbourhoods weaving their ways through the hilly slopes surrounding it. The Port is so significant for people living here that they do not call themselves Valparaisans or some other alternative of this, rather they are Portenos and proud of it and the historical significance the port played in building Chile up. Although still a relatively vital port to Chile it is not the biggest or the busiest. In fact when we went down to check it out I was surprised that so much importance was put on this port. It wasn’t until after participating on one of the walking tours into the inner secrets of Valparaiso that I began to understand Valpo a bit more.
